New York residents may have seen the Van Leeuwen artisan ice cream van casually parked in their neighbourhood, teasing them with a range of hand made delights [the strawberry ice cream boasts hand picked strawberries sourced seasonally, while the vanilla is oak barrel aged for three months with ingredients including organic bourbon, and Tahitian beans].

However, this enterprise is not only a NY culinary gem, it is a forward thinking business with eco-friendly packaging solutions.

The spoons are made by World Centric and are biocompostable made from non-GMO corn starch, while the bowls are Bagasse, made from residual sugarcane fiber, leftover after juice extraction and can withstand temperatures of up to 220 degrees F.

Trash collection has been a problem in Naples for years. A “waste disposal state of emergency” was first declared in 1994, and the piles of trash were threatening public health last summer. A massive incinerator was meant to open at the end of 2007, but it’s not yet ready. Critics blame corruption, political foot-dragging and a mafia-run system of illegal industrial dumps for the ongoing trouble.
